According to the Demographic and Health in Senegal, maternal mortality remains high: more than 510 deaths per 100,000 births. At the same time, the modern contraceptive prevalence rate remains low. It is estimated at 8.1% despite the fact that 87% of married women of reproductive age and 93% of married men know at least one modern method of contraception. The use of birth spacing should allow a reduction of 25% of maternal mortality.

Thierno Dieng, statistician, representing the Center for Training and Research Centre for Reproductive Health, gave a presentation on survival and maternal health. He pointed particularly to the delays in deciding to consult with Health Services, to reach a health facility or locked away, to receive adequate treatment. Mr Dieng has dwelled on the seven pillars of mortality at lower risk. These are the Primary Health Care, Family Planning, antenatal care, emergency obstetric care, postnatal care, post-abortion and the fight against STDs. For him, it takes a favorable legal environment, raise some sociocultural barriers and improve the status of women in order to implement a good policy to safe motherhood.
